On smaller screens, a very common approach is to use the "Hamburger" style layout for the menu.

However, I found that the "Hamburger" layout looks best on mobile view, since you have limited display size.

But on tablet I personally would use the regular "Horizontal" layout, since you have more space available (unless you want to display more than 5 main items on your menu, then you should use the "Hamburger" style layout with no problem whatsoever).
