/ɛ/ vs /eɪ/ Minimal Pairs - American English Listening and Pronunciation Practice

This video will help train your ear to hear the difference between the /ɛ/ as in RED vowel sound and the /eɪ/ as in GRAY vowel sound. Listen to each Minimal Pair and repeat the words aloud. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound.)

To make the /ɛ/ as in RED sound, the tongue is relaxed in the mid-high position. The lips are also relaxed and are farther apart than for the /ei/ as in GRAY sound.

The /eɪ/ as in GRAY vowel sound is a diphthong - or moving sound - made up of two different target mouth positions and sounds. When making the /eɪ/ vowel sound the lips are relaxed, not rounded, and the mouth is slightly open. The tongue moves from a mid-high to high position as the jaw moves up. Diphthongs are also thought of as "gliding vowels."
