Chandanappally St. George Orthodox Valiyapalli

The Valiyapalli is the church that started the ritual of Chembeduppu , which is seen in Christian churches today. The historic Chandanappally Chembeduppu is a ceremony where the main attraction of the festival, rice, is cooked at a place called Chembinmoodu to the east of the church and then brought to the Kuthrapura festively. This function is called the Chandanappally Chembeduppu. The first to put rice in the Chembeduppu is the Karan of the Angadikkal Mekkat Nair family. Then the believers. The believers offer their vows in 2 Chembeduppu, each holding 11 paras of rice. This is steamed in fresh water. About 150 pounds of rice is cooked in this way. At 4 pm, 2 full chembeevu are tied with bamboo shoots and tied with a rope. Then, the chief priest puts a sleeba on the Chembeduppu , and the believers become the chembeevu bearers. Ho… hoi.. With shouts and chants of praise and thanksgiving, the Chembeduppu is carried to the horse shed. Thousands of devotees will receive it by scattering flowers and betel leaves. The Chembeduppu will be circumambulated three times around the cross and placed in a kuthirapura. Then, the rice in the Chembeduppu will be offered to the devotees as a vow.

Chandanappally St. George Orthodox Valiyapalli, a global pilgrimage centre and home to the relics of Saint Geevarghese Sahada, is one of the famous churches of the Malankara Church. Christian migration to Chandanappally occurred in the late 17th century. The first Christian church was established around 1790. The church, built of sandalwood, was renovated in 1875. Mar Gregorios (Abdullah Patriarch) laid the foundation stone of the church. In 1986, work began to rebuild the church. On December 25, 1986, Pari. Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, Catholicos of the Church, laid the church's foundation stone. The church, built in Indo-Saracenic architecture, is beautiful in appearance and size. The main festival is on the 7th and 8th. The famous copper-picking ceremony will be held on May 8th.
