Burning Scalp Syndrome is a complex entity that is poorly understood where the patient presents with unpleasant skin sensations ie, burning, stinging or pain in the scalp. These patients have no apparent diagnosable dermatologic cause that explains the cutaneous symptom, and typically have negative findings upon medical workup. Somatisation can play a central rolein the pathogenesis of burning scalp.
Burning scalp syndrome consists of interplay between neurobiological factors associated with neuropathic pain, neurologic/neuropsychotic states (e.g. radiculopathies, stroke, depression, and obssesive compulsive disorders). Sleep deprivation and insomnia are common complaints. The lecture will cover the pathophysiology and management of this complex system.
