In warehouse environments, sortation is leveraged at many points in a facility to organize and streamline items between workflows.

In batch picking operations, the goal is to get items sorted to their proper order containers and shipped as quickly as possible. A common solution for this workflow is a put wall. Throughput is the most important metric during this sortation workflow. But there is all too often no off-the-shelf integration to automated sorting technologies.

After orders are consolidated and packed in their shipping containers, sorting to the proper shipper for outbound delivery is often another step in the process. This sortation can be quite complex depending on the operation, with 20+ potential sort locations for packages.

A few common themes that emerge throughout these various sortation instances are:

Speed. Sorting items, cases, and packages is a necessary step to getting orders fulfilled and leaving the facility. But it is not often a value-added workflow to the order itself, so it is paramount to maximize speed.

Quality. Ensuring the proper item is sorted to the proper location will reduce exception handling and rectifying errors. This slows down the process and results in rework.
