A rectangular coordinate system (or Cartesian coordinate system) uses perpendicular axes (x, y, and z) to describe the position and direction of vectors. Vector components are the portions of a vector that lie along these axes, essentially the vector's "shadow" projected onto each axis. These scalar components (like A_x and A_y) can be combined to form the vector (A = A_x + A_y) and are crucial for performing mathematical operations with vectors.
