I talk about the IVF Pyramid with all of my patients. It helps us visualize and prepare for what happens during IVF and what to expect.

Today on the Egg Whisperer Show, I’m delighted to have the inventor of the IVF Pyramid joining me! Dr. Max Ezzati is a reproductive endocrinologist with Palo Alto Medical Foundation in San Jose, California.

So often in IVF, we talk about things in terms of depletion. What are you losing?

For example, you start off with a certain number of eggs at the beginning of the cycle. That’s called the antral follicle count. As the cycle progresses sometimes not all of those eggs grow. In the end, for example, you may gain two healthy embryos from twenty follicles and so it is a natural and normal human response to feel like something is lost and that something was taken away from you. I want to flip that on its head.

Instead, you’ve started with twenty eggs from which you’ve now gained two embryos. So it took twenty follicles to get the two eggs from that cycle. Dr. Ezzati’s pyramid makes this concept much easier to understand.

I’m excited to have this conversation during National Infertility Awareness Week! It just takes talking about the whole process a little differently to help you know more, and I can’t wait for you to hear how Dr. Ezzati explains it.
