There are few watches more iconic or recognizable than the Rolex Submariner. First introduced in 1953, this was not the first dive watch on the market, but it has left an indelible mark both in and out of the watch collecting world. Arguably the platonic ideal of a steel sports watch, the black and steel Submariner could well be the only watch you ever need.

Today, Tim examines the most recent edition of the Submariner’s most austere variant, the ref. 124060 No Date Submariner. Released as part of the Rolex’s delayed 2020 model year, this updated dive watch featured an updated movement, redefined proportions, and (most controversially) a new 41mm case size.

Powered by the Rolex Caliber 3230, this new generation of the Submariner brings a number of quality of life improvements to the iconic line, including a 70-hour power reserve and dramatically improved anti-magnetic capabilities. Though not the most technically impressive dive watch in the Rolex catalogue, that honor lies with the newly released Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea Challenge, the Rolex Submariner is capable of surviving just about everything one could ever hope to throw at it.
