Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's 5 Negro Folksongs for Piano Trio, Op.59 No.1 (1905), are chamber arrangements of selections from his earlier, groundbreaking set of 24 Negro Melodies for Piano that share the same opus number. The addition of a violin and a cello significantly increases the color and textural interest of the composer's original conception. The second of the five, "I Was Way Down A-Yonder" is among the most plainly beautiful things penned by this composer. The Coleridge Ensemble (led by the late William Thomas) made the first recording of the five-movement suite along with world premieres of Coleridge-Taylor's Nonet and Fantasiestücke for String Quartet.
The Coleridge Ensemble
