A variety of spins on the basic Zirdle (or Zirdle Bug) fly pattern have been among the hottest flies in western Montana over the past ten seasons or so. All have a body reminiscent of a Girdle Bug (aka Pat's Rubberlegs) with the addition of a Zonker strip, usually made from squirrel rather than rabbit. Hence the mashup name.
This particular version was the best size and color combination for me during the early part of the summer guiding season on the Yellowstone River in 2024, from about June 20 through July 4. It works both under an indicator and under a hefty dry fly like a Chubby Chernobyl.
For smallmouth bass, it could also be stripped as a streamer.
Change sizes/colors to suit your needs. The most popular combo in Montana most years subs in an olive wing and runs significantly bigger. In this guise, it imitates crayfish.
