Journey Into Imagination With Figment (2002) | Imagination! Pavilion | Epcot | Walt Disney World

The real title to this video should be, "Journey Into Your Imagination With Figment," since that was the name of the attraction when it (re)opened on June 2, 2002, and was the name of the attraction when this was taped. A year later the "Your" was dropped. (See below.)

The attraction features "One Little Spark" by the Sherman Brothers, which may be the only existing Sherman Brothers song in an Epcot attraction. The boys had another about computers, but it became outdated about 30 seconds after the attraction opened (showing non-computer people shouldn't write songs about computers), and Magic Journeys closed decades ago.

The thumbnail and opening shot are in HD, but the attraction itself is in NTSC 480i, pretending to be 1080p, because it was 2002. Sorry for the bait and switch, lol. This is probably the last Sherman Brothers Attraction video I have.


In the mid-1990's, Kodak (the sponsor of the Imagination! Pavilion) wanted a change. Many of the Future World pavilions were getting upgrades, and Epcot would be approaching it's 20th anniversary. It was very good timing for Disney, as in a few short years Kodak would be in no position to financially support a Disney World Pavilion, much less fund an upgrade.

Journey Into Your Imagination arrived in October 1999, replacing Journey Into Imagination. It starred Eric Idle as Dr. Nigel Channing, and removed the beloved character Dreamfinder and turned Figment into an almost afterthought.

It didn't help that Dr. Channing declares everyone on the attraction was an idiot had no imagination at the start.

It was such a stinker and so unpopular, that a mere 2 years later, they would again re-imagine the attraction, bringing back Figment as the main focus of the attraction. The "new" attraction was named "Journey Into Your Imagination With Figment", but about a year later, the "Your" was dropped to further distance itself from the 1999 disaster.

Trivia:
At the D23 event for Epcot's 30th anniversary, Tony Baxter did a presentation on the Imagination! Pavilion, and many of the elements that went into it. My report can be found here:

The glass structures that sit on top of the pavilion are not pyramids, but crystals.

Figment got it's name from the TV show Magnum P.I. Baxter was watching an episode, trying to some up with a name for the dragon, and he heard a quote from Higgins:

"Don't tell me it's a figment of my imagination. Figments don't eat rare tropical fowls." (Someone even dug up the clip.)

Billy Barty voiced Figment. If you want to hear Figment say some rather off-color remarks, lookup one of this old movies, lol.
