Humberto Maturana, who made significant contributions to various fields during his 92-year life, was born on September 14, 1928. Primarily working in biology, philosophy, and neuroscience, Maturana was influenced by the second wave of cybernetics and is even considered by some to be part of that movement. With Francisco Varela and Ricardo Uribe, he introduced the concept of 'autopoiesis,' which led to new breakthroughs in biology, cognitive science, and philosophy. He views life and living beings as self-creating phenomena that actively interact with 'their world.' Maturana was also one of the authors of the classic paper in the history of cognitive science and neuroscience, "What the Frog's Brain Tells the Frog's Eye?" along with Lettvin, McCulloch, and Pitts. Humberto Maturana passed away in 2021, and we commemorated him on Saturday, September 14th.
We thank Mario Villalobos (PhD) for accepting our invitation, for his wonderful talk and all the participants that joined us on this important date.
