大東亜戦争から戦後80年、レイテ沖海戦から81年、
忘れられた戦場と呼ばれたレイテ島の戦いに身を投じた将兵達の足跡を辿る慰霊碑巡礼の旅パート3

ブラウエンからカポーカンに移動して、レイテ島の戦い最大の激戦地 リモン峠にある第1師団の慰霊碑で手を合わせて来ました。🙏
片岡董師団長率いる第1師団第57連隊はリモン峠で50日間にも及び米軍の進行を阻止して死闘を繰り広げました。第1師団の勇敢な戦いぶりは、米軍の連隊長からも称賛される見事な戦いぶりでした。

11月1日、オルモックに上陸した第一師団の本体は、オルモック街道を北上しカリガラ平野に進軍を開始した。
第16師団と、一体となって米軍を殲滅する作戦であったが、16師団は既に壊滅状態に陥っており、カリガラ平野は米軍の制圧下となっていた。そんな情勢下で第一師団はリモン峠で、米軍の第一線と遭遇することになり、レイテ戦最大の戦いが開始された。
57連隊がリモン峠の前線で米軍と交戦している頃、第1連隊と第49連隊は右翼としてオルモック街道に展開しそれぞれ奮戦した。

リモン峠の戦いで約5千人の日本兵と2千人の米兵が命を落とした。
通常、殆どの戦闘でアメリカ軍の死傷者は日本軍の死傷者の10％以下だったが、この遭遇戦では米軍の死傷者は40％に達した。

12月21日にセブに転進命令が出た時、前線で戦っていた57連隊は2500名の内、生存者は91名のみであった。

80 Years After the War, Memorial Pilgrimage for the war dead of the Battle of Leyte Part 3.🏝️

From Burauen, We moved to Capoocan and went to Lemon Pass, the site of the biggest battle of the Battle of Leyte, to join hands at the Cenotaph of the 1st Division. 🙏

The 57th Regiment of the 1st Division, led by Division Commander Kataoka Dong, fought to the death for 50 days at the Limon Pass, blocking the progress of the U.S. forces. The 1st Division's valiant fighting performance was praised by the regimental commander of the U.S. Army for its brilliant fighting performance.

On November 1, the 1st Division landed at Ormoc and began marching northward along the Ormoc Road to the Carigara Plain

The 1st Division was supposed to cooperate with the 16th Division to destroy the U.S. forces, but the 16th Division had already been destroyed and the Carigara Plain was under U.S. control.
Under these circumstances, the 1st Division encountered the US forces at Lemon Pass, and the largest battle of the Battle of Leyte began.

While the 57th Regiment was engaging the U.S. forces on the front line of Lemon Pass, the 1st and 49th Regiments deployed on the Ormoc Road as the right flank and fought hard, respectively.

Ultimately around 5.000 Japanese soldiers and 2,000 American spidiers lost their lives.
Typically, American casualties were less than 10% of Japanese casualties in most battles, but in the encounter, American casualties reached 40%.

When the order to move to Cebu came on December 21, the 57th Regiment, fighting on the front, had only 91 survivors out of 2,500 men.
