Prevention and Control of Banana Bunchy Top Disease | Lakatan Banana Farming

In this video, I'm gonna show you Banana Bunchy Top Disease infections in our farm.

Banana Bunchy Top Disease(BBTD) is a viral disease caused by Banana Bunchy Top Virus(BBTV). It gets its name from the bunchy appearance of infected banana hills. It was caused by the aphids called Pentalonia nigronervosa. It was first observed in Fiji in 1879.

Signs and Symptoms
1. New leaves are stunted and bunchy.
2. Leaf edges of the banana plants are deformed and yellow.

How to Prevent and Control the Spread of Banana Bunchy Top Virus?

Control of banana bunchy top disease is achieved by killing the banana aphids and destroying the infected banana hills and all the plant material should be destroyed to prevent the spread of the virus.

Apply weedicide or herbicide to the infected banana plants
Do not plant again a banana plant on the infected soil.
Plant a banana tissue cultured with a distance to replace the infected banana plant.
Disinfect the tools being used in the removal of the infected banana material.

Transmission of Banana Bunchy Top Disease

Infected banana plants cannot recover and will serve as a source of viral infections unless they are destroyed. The Banana Bunchy Top Virus is also spread through infected planting material, in our case with the banana corm we acquired from a nearby farm.
