Mido Ocean Star 200

A huge bang for the buck:

The Mido Ocean Star 200 is a very well made self-winding watch. Due to its water-resistance it can be used even for scuba diving. However, if it can be taken down to 200 m depth- I’m not sure (check it’s manual or ask the supplier…) – The comment, you can’t dive deeper than 70 m with compressed air because of the oxygen: The air contains approx. 21% oxygen. Oxygen is getting poisonous at a partial pressure of 1,4 bar, that limits the diving depth – not related to any watch design, just to the gas that a diver is breathing.

We liked that watch a lot. It was supplied for the video by a friend who stayed in our house the other day. What is so fascinating is, the price is a little above € 1.000,- in 2022. It really ticks all boxes of a nice watch, such as amagnetic hairspring (no influence by magnetic fields on a mechanical watch), water resistance, date complication, and it looks gorgeous.

Using a diver’s in daily life is a question of taste. For going to the beach or in summer, swimming, diving, boating or when wearing T-shirts in warm weather, it’s absolutely perfect. However, I myself had a diver’s when I was a teen-ager. It basically destroyed all my left cuffs, shirts, jumpers, whatever. And- I think, it’s a sports thing. Not for the office, inconvenient in the workshop, because either it wears clothes or dirt is stuck on that dive bezel.
Mido offers other watches such as the Multifort. Some watches of that line are waterproof up to 10 ATM, in other words, they can be used for swimming and things at the beach at least. Same amagnetic hairspring / movement on top. To my (very personal) understanding, an absolutely perfect every-day watch for really all occasions.

The only drawback I see with the Mido collection in general is, there are ladies’ watches with diameters of 29 … 34 mm, and men’s watches around 42 mm, but so far no unisex stuff around 36 mm and water-resistant to at least 10 ATM. Why? At least all girls and ladies in my environment do have watches that size and dislike traditional ladies watch sizes of sizes up to 34 mm for their poor read-out. Looks like Mido hasn’t heard about this so far… .
