Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment used for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and some psychiatric disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder. It involves implanting thin electrodes into specific areas of the brain and connecting them to a small pulse generator, similar to a pacemaker. The device delivers electrical impulses that help regulate abnormal brain activity, easing symptoms like tremors, stiffness, or uncontrolled movements. During DBS surgery, many patients are kept awake for part of the procedure. This allows surgeons to monitor brain responses in real time and ensure that the electrodes are placed in the exact region responsible for symptom control—without affecting critical areas that control speech, movement, or sensation. By asking patients to perform simple tasks or respond to questions during surgery, doctors can fine-tune electrode placement with precision, making the procedure both safer and more effective.
