Cool Gypsy Jazz Solos - An Easy Scale Over C7

Here's a cool little hack that will completely change the way you approach dominant 7 chords in your solos.

When you see C7, most guitarists get confused. "Am I supposed to play a C major scale? A C minor scale? What is it?"

I remember having that exact same confusion when I was learning.

But here's the simple truth: Anything you can play in G minor will sound cool over C7.

G minor scales. G minor arpeggios. G minor licks. All of it works.

And it gives you that wild, modern gypsy jazz sound that makes people stop and ask, "What are you playing?"

In this video, I'll show you:

✅ Why this hack works (the logic behind it)
✅ A simple G minor-type scale you can play over C7
✅ How to visualize it on the fretboard around the third fret
✅ How it sounds over C7 with a looper demonstration
✅ How to apply this concept to any dominant 7 chord

The concept is simple:

When you're playing over a dominant 7 chord, play anything you would usually play in the minor key a fifth above.

Over C7, play G minor ideas
Over D7, play A minor ideas
Over E7, play B minor ideas
Over G7, play D minor ideas
Once you see the pattern, it becomes very easy to navigate.

Here's the G minor-type scale I show you in the video:

Starting on G at the third fret, it's basically a bluesy G minor idea that sits nicely around that position. You've got the resolving note (A down to G), the flat seventh (F), the sixth (E), and continuing down through D, C, B-flat, A, and back to G.

Very simple. Very effective.

For me, this really frees me up — because I find it much easier to improvise over minor sounds than dominant ones. So now, anything I know in G minor works over that C7.

This is a simple idea, but it opens the door to a much bigger world — things like chord substitution and superimposing harmony. But this is a great place to start.

Important note: The concept of playing the minor scale over a dominant 7 chord is a great start, but don't be limited to only the notes from the scale. Use it as a springboard to introduce some wild and wonderful new sounds into your solos!
