The Secret Spanish Legend That Beat Jaguar & Ferrari!
In the years after World War II, most countries were struggling to rebuild, and Spain was no different. But while others focused on making simple cars and trucks, one Spanish truck company dared to dream bigger. That company was ENASA, and what they built shocked the entire automotive world. This is the amazing story of the Pegaso Z-102—a Spanish supercar that once became the fastest production car in the world and even challenged Ferrari.
The story starts in 1946 in Barcelona, where the Spanish government took over the remains of an old luxury car company called Hispano-Suiza. They created a new state-run company called ENASA to build buses and trucks. But under the leadership of engineer Wifredo Ricart, ENASA did something no one expected. They built a powerful, high-tech sports car that could compete with the best cars from Italy and Germany. Ricart had worked at Alfa Romeo before, where he even clashed with Enzo Ferrari himself. Now, back in Spain, he had the freedom to design his dream machine.
The Pegaso Z-102 wasn’t just fast—it was packed with advanced technology. It had an all-aluminum V8 engine, dry-sump lubrication, and a rear-mounted five-speed transaxle for better balance. Some versions were even supercharged and could reach nearly 300 horsepower. In 1953, the Pegaso broke several speed records in Belgium, officially becoming the fastest production car in the world at over 151 mph.
The car looked as amazing as it performed. Famous designers from Italy, France, and Spain helped shape the bodywork into rolling art. From sleek aluminum coupes to wild convertibles with gold-plated controls and even a futuristic concept called the “Cupola,” Pegaso cars were truly one-of-a-kind.
Sadly, the project was too expensive to survive. Only about 84 cars were ever built, and by 1958, the program was shut down. Spain’s government destroyed the tools and drawings, making it almost impossible to build or restore more cars. Still, the Pegaso Z-102 remains a legend among car fans today.
