McLaren 540C - Review at Castle Combe

Today we drive the 540C down to the West Country to visit The Manor House, Castle Coombe. A country house with luxury hotel credentials and well worth a visit. Overall this car's a seriously good long distance machine especially for a supercar and this car is fast!!

The 540C engine, a 3.8litre Twin Turbo V8, produces 540hp or 533bhp at 7500rpm. 0-62 is dispatched in 3.5 seconds with the 100mph mark coming up in 7 seconds dead when the car is truly getting into it's stride. 0-124mph takes 10.5secs.

But it is the sophisticated suspension that is most in evidence on the way down to Castle Coombe rather than the outright performance and overall the 540C plays the part of long distance cruiser remarkably well allowing you to emerge fresh at the end of a 100 mile drive. I complete both legs of the journey in the same day and was surprised to find how well the car's cabin isolates you from the road noise. A pleasant change from the Speciale and 675LT.

Overall I feel the suspension in this car is perfectly judged and if your emphasis is on city or long distance driving you will appreciate the genuine comfort on offer without compromises having to be made in the handling department.
