Imagine a Goan thali with 22 vatis and 26 items. The legendary Bhatkar (landowner) thali at Cinnamon restaurant in Margao’s Government Rest House on Monte Hill is so massive, it comes with a Bhatkar’s hat for you to wear while eating it. So you can look the part while eating like a lord. This is one experience you are unlikely to ever forget!

To get to Cinnamon restaurant, from Margao’s Holy Spirit Church, turn right to old Hospicio hospital. Immediately after Hospicio, opposite the Urban Health Centre, turn left onto Hospicio Hospital road. Then just after the hospital, take the first left turn onto Monte Hill road. Continue for 800 metres, till you see the electricity substation on the right. Immediately after this, take the right turn into the Government Rest House. Cinnamon restaurant is right up in front of the rest house.

At the very entrance, Cinnamon proudly advertises its Bhatkar thali. Maria, Travis and I are going to share a Bhatkar thali. Roma is going to have a regular Goan chicken thali.

Cinnamon has won awards at the Saraswat festival held at Margao’s BPS Club. Perhaps that’s why it proudly displays the highlights of its Goan Saraswat menu as part of its wall decor. And occupying pride of place among the thalis adorning the walls is of course, the Bhatkar thali.

It takes two people to bring the Bhatkar thali to the table. One for the thali, and one for the hats! All diners who order Cinnamon’s Bhatkar thali get a hat to wear. The size of the thali has left us momentarily tongue tied! Over and above this is Roma’s Goan chicken thali, which is not small either.

Cinnamon’s award-winning chef Saish Rajadhyax introduces some of the Bhatkar thali items. These were the items we were served on July 22, 2023: prawns daangar; tisreo sukka; chicken cafreal; chicken masala; chicken sukka; crab xacuti; prawn curry; rice; salad; curd raita; chutney; pickles; sol kari; shevyache godshe (kheer); tambdi bhaji; dry prawns kismur; prawns rawa fry; vellio rawa fry; boiled egg; leppo rawa fry; kokum sharbat; kingfish rawa fry; omelette; fruit salad; parotta; and papad.

In comparison, Roma’s chicken thali has a tame 12 items: chicken rawa fry; chicken sukka; chicken masala; dal; chapathi; chicken biryani; tambdi bhaji; kheer; raita; sol kari; salad; and pickles.

The Bhatkar thali is no mere gimmick. Each item on the thali is delicious.
