Some fantasticly joyous singing as more young mums gather at York Community Maternity Clinic to collect their baby bonus for making sure their newborns receive all their vaccinations. After introductions and explanations from chief health officer Lansana Fofanah, Hope national coordinator, William Tieh, handed 100 leone cash money to fifty women, including 17 who missed out last time, who all did the right thing and protected their babies against life-threatening illnesses and disease. Research shows that giving direct cash payments empowers mothers, enhances their decision-making power at home and positively impacts their childs’ well-being and in the absence of a social welfare system in Sierra Leone, we think rewarding Mums even in a small way, is a big step in the right direction in addressing some of the many inequalities women face. Following on from the last meet Hope provided food items for the Mums to cook, serving up huge plates of a delicious, nutritious groundnut soup - packed full of protein, vitamins E, B3 and B6, calcium and folate, with Bonga (the most protein dense fish) and mokabi (garden egg) to give the soup a nice draw and boost the women’s calcium and iron intake as well as providing a good dose of vitamins A, B6 and C - which Mums, babes and toddlers all enjoyed!
