How We Use Animals In Therapy Work For Children And Adults (Or What Sandra Does All Day)

We've been thinking about making this video for months, but it was important to get it right. We’re not trying to run some sort of petting zoo here – it’s a bit more complicated than that. Lots of people find animals easier to relate to than other people. (Of course people are animals too, but you know what I mean.) Children especially can find a simpler relationship with a dog or a horse than with a classroom full of noisy competitive peers.

So we help them build a relationship with whatever animal they choose, and within that relationship explore boundaries and abilities and skills. It’s all very interesting and often incredibly exciting and rewarding, for me (Sandra) and for the children (mostly) who come to visit. Living and working with animals of all sorts is good for us, and probably for most people. But not everyone is able to do what we do, so we consider ourselves very lucky. They have added whole new dimensions to our lives here and help us understand better what it is to be human in a complicated world. You certainly don’t have to have special needs or some sort of diagnosed condition to benefit from hanging out with horses or dogs or whatever – we could all benefit from a daily hug from a four legged friend..
