Duxton Road, a one-way street linking Neil Road to Craig Road, has a storied past dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially part of a nutmeg plantation owned by William Montgomerie, it was notorious for its opium dens, gambling establishments, and cheap brothels. The street was often referred to as "jinricksha place" due to the abundance of rickshaws parked there daily, operated mainly by pullers from China's Fujian province. Despite its seedy reputation, wealthy Chinese families constructed elegant residences and shophouses along Duxton Hill, now a designated conservation area. Today, the restored shophouses on Duxton Road house various establishments, including the boutique hotel Six Senses Duxton. Nearby landmarks include Pinnacle@Duxton, a notable public housing project, and Duxton Plain Park, where a tembusu tree stands as a tribute to Singapore's late former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
