Burning Spear, born Winston Rodney on March 1, 1945, in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica, is a legendary roots reggae singer and one of the most influential voices in the genre.
He was influenced by Bob Marley, who helped him take his first steps into the music industry.
His stage name was inspired by Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya, symbolizing resistance and independence.
He started in 1969 with his first album Studio One Presents Burning Spear and his breakthrough came in 1975 with the album Marcus Garvey, dedicated to the black liberation leader of the same name.
His music is deeply rooted in the Rastafari faith, with themes like African pride, spirituality, and social justice.
