This worn-out pair of Red Wing Roughneck 8146 boots, in Briar Oil Slick leather, was in dire need of restoration when I found them for sale online. This style is my personal favorite from the brand (and I’ve got a few pairs for easy comparison). Restoring heritage boots like these takes just a few things:
Horsehair Brushes
Fiebing's Saddle Soap
Bick 4 Leather Conditioner
Pigmented Shoe Cream
Gloves
Paper Towels
And here is the step by step restoration process:
1) Brush your boots with a horsehair brush.
2) Clean the leather of the boots with Fiebing's Saddle Soap and a dauber brush.
3) Wipe away soap and water with a paper towel and let dry completely.
4) Protect stitiching with masking tape and stuff the boot with paper to give the boot shape and support.
5) Apply Bick 4 Leather Conditioner.
6) Using a gloved hand, apply small amounts of pigmented shoe cream (Saphir is ideal) where needed.
7) Brush thoroughly with a horsehair brush.
