How to raise a confident, respectful, and independent kid

It’s so easy to jump in and speak for our kids—I get it. It’s faster, it’s easier, and honestly, I still do it too.

But I’m always looking for small moments where I can step back and let Sophia take the lead—especially when interacting with people in the community.

And if your child is shy? Make sure the interaction is highly motivating and reduce the effort.

For example, if you’re at Target, instead of having your child get someone’s attention AND say, “Can you please tell me where the toy aisle is located?”—you can get the employee’s attention yourself and shorten the phrase for your child.

Another way to reduce effort: tell them exactly what to say.

At the library, instead of “Go ask the librarian,” you can say, “Walk over and say, ‘Can you tell me where to find the Fancy Nancy books?’”
