Brickwork is defined as a construction system that involves the use of bricks to create walls and structures, known for its strength, thermal, and acoustical properties, and is commonly employed in both developed and developing countries.
Brickwork types vary by mortar used (mud, cement/lime), brick placement/bond (Stretcher, Header, English, Flemish, Stack, Herringbone), and even the brick's position (soldier, shiner). The main categories are based on how bricks interlock for strength and aesthetics, like the strong English/Flemish bonds for structural walls versus decorative stacks or basket weaves.
By Mortar Type
Mud Brickwork: Uses mud mortar, common in older or vernacular structures.
Cement/Lime Brickwork: Uses cement or lime mortar for high strength, standard in modern construction (classified as I, II, III class based on quality).
By Brick Bond (Placement Pattern)
Stretcher Bond: All bricks laid with their long face (stretcher) showing; simple, common for half-brick walls.
Header Bond: Bricks laid with their narrow face (header) showing; used for curved walls.
English Bond: Alternating courses of headers and stretchers, very strong.
Flemish Bond: Alternating headers and stretchers in each course; aesthetically pleasing (Single/Double Flemish).
Stack Bond: Bricks stacked directly on top of each other, no overlap; decorative but weak.
Herringbone Bond: Bricks laid at 45-degree angles in a zigzag pattern, often for floors or decorative walls.
Garden Wall Bond: Uses headers in patterns to create a decorative effect, often with thinner walls.
By Brick Position (Facing)
Stretcher: Long face exposed.
Header: Short face exposed.
Soldier: Vertical, long face exposed.
Sailor: Vertical, broad face exposed.
Rowlock/Shiner: Laid on its side (long edge) with end or broad face exposed.
