Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge - Sony PS2 Classic Racing Game (2004)

Taking a look back at the classic racing game Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge! Developed by Climax Brighton and published by THQ, the game was first launched in 2004 for the Sony Playstation 2, original XBOX, Game Boy Advance, and Windows PC.

The version showcased here is the PS2 version running off the original hardware.

The game had mixed reviews and fairly strong sales. Having sold over 1.1 million copies worldwide, with the majority of those sales originating in the U.S. market alone. This was not surprising given the fact Hot Wheels has long been an iconic American brand that easy to identify with.

The game consists of a series of stunt track challenges and race tracks, and has a career mode called game show mode, in which players compete to unlock new tracks, cars, and stunt based challenges.

There's also obstacle courses where you collect coins to unlock additional in game items, such as new decals for your vehicles.

Some tracks in the game have alternate hidden routes, that when unlocked, can give players a slight time based advantage over their opponents.

The game also has a turbo boost feature, which is indicated by an on-screen meter that shows how much boost you have at any given time. You gain boost by picking up flames, as well as pulling off stunts during jumps.

Something else to note here is that your opponents will often try and grab the flames before you do, in effect leaving you in the dust when they do so. Likewise, if you flop and land haphazardly on your stunts, it will cancel out the boost you would have gained had you made a smooth landing.

The game also has some obstacles, such as concrete barriers and bombs. When players come into contact with the bombs and they explode, a shockwave traverses the screen, slowing the player to a crawl in the process. As for the concrete barriers, their effects are really negligible, and they don't have much effect on slowing your vehicle the way bombs do.

The video showcases 5 tracks from the game, including Dinosaur Boneyard, Terror Saur, Black Widows Nest, White Skull Cliffs, and Insect Hive. So you have some interesting themes, such as Dinosaurs, spiders, and even pirate and tropical themed tracks like the White Skull Cliffs.

As for the cars in the game, you have sports and muscle cars, along with trucks. The sports cars tend to be lighter and faster accelerating, while the muscle cars and trucks are much heavier, are bit slower accelerating, but they also tend to have higher top speeds.
