Duerme Negrito - Athualpa Yuanqui, arr. Emilio Sole
This charming piece possesses a somewhat circuitous history not uncommon for folk music. It appears to have originated as a traditional Cuban song, then later adapted, recorded, and popularized by the Argentine folk singer and social activist Atahualpa Yupanqui (1908-92), whose version is arranged here by Venezuelan composer Emile Solé. While on one level a simple lullaby, on a deeper level the song also reflects the dehumanizing slave conditions present for centuries in many parts of the New World. Slaves in the Southern Hemisphere often faced even worse treatment than those in the United States prior to the Civl War. The child promised bountiful delights despite the plight of the sick, destitute mother.
