Monster storm hits Texas, New York and Connecticut | ABS-CBN News

Heavy snow and ice from a monster winter storm swept across Texas, New York and Connecticut on Sunday (January 25), paralyzing eastern and southern states with heavy snow and ice.

In Ridgefield, Connecticut, snow blanketed streets and sidewalks as residents used snow blowers and plows worked to clear roads and parking lots.

Farther south in Denton, Texas, drivers navigated icy roads while pedestrians bundled in winter gear crossed snow‑covered intersections.

In New York City’s Astoria neighborhood, snow plows pushed through accumulating drifts as visibility dropped along the East River skyline.

In the Maspeth neighborhood of Queens, passersby helped push a car stuck in the snow as others shoveled sidewalks and driveways.

"The snow, I think, it's obnoxious - because there's too much and we can't get out of the house unless we have to shovel or like, do anything," said Shaun. "But it's my first time here in three years and I kind of miss it. So we're planning that maybe we can do something other than shovel and just play with the kids."

Maspeth resident Milagros brought her 14-year-old dog, Snowy, outside to experience the storm, despite his health problems.

"He has heart failure and stuff like that but he's enjoying it," she said.

Across Manhattan, buses rolled by with chains on their rear wheels, snowplows cleared streets and pedestrians struggled to keep their footing on slick sidewalks. In Morningside Heights, Kathryn Graybill, returning from church said the snow "blowing in my face pricks like little pins, but it's great to see it."

Graybill said she was grateful for essential workers keeping the city running.
"They're trying to keep people safe," she said.

"I love it," said Michael Harney. "We don't get so many of them in New York, so I just had to come out and enjoy the... just the barrenness of it, I guess - and the beauty, it's great."
With snow, sleet, freezing rain and dangerously frigid temperatures sweeping into the eastern two-thirds of the nation, 17 states and the District of Columbia declared weather emergencies on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Forecasters warned of “bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills” from the southern plains to the Northeast, threatening prolonged hazards for travel and infrastructure.
The National Weather Service's latest forecast for Sunday through Monday morning calls for heavy snow from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast, including up to 18 inches in New England. Much of the Southeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic are expected to get rain and freezing rain.
