Save your back using a vertical leg press as an alternative to squats. In this video I tell the story of how heavy half squats with weights led tome having spinal generation so severe that it necessitated spinal fusion surgery. I want to give fair warning to young people not to do what I did and consider the vertical leg press alternative to heavy squats. Not only is it a safer alternative but when you consider a vertical leg press vs a 45 degree leg press, it is also a less expensive alternative with a much smaller footprint. Other vertical leg press benefits incude a stance variations to target specific muscle groups more intensely. A narrow stance requires strong use of the quadriceps while a wider stance will put more emphasis on the inner thigh muscles. Vertical leg presses have the potential to also strongly work the gluteal muscles.
