There are 2 ways to find the square root or a number in excel, by creating our own formula, or by using the built in square root function.

First to create your own formula. And a quick reminder, as an example for the square root of 144, in math, we can write it like this, with the square root symbol, or we can write it as 144 raised to the ½, and this is the way we are going to enter it in excel.

So, to do this in excel, left click on the answer cell, here cell A3, so it is highlighted. Next, type in an equals sign. From here, type in the number you want the square root of, here, 144. Now, we type in a to a power symbol, called a carrot sign in excel, which is shift 6 on the keyboard. Next, type in an open parenthesis, then a 1, then a forward slash, which is the division symbol in excel. Next, we type in a 2, then a closed parenthesis. And we finish by hitting the enter key, and we have our answer of 12.

Now for the second method, using the built in function.

As an example, if we want the square root of the number 36 in cell C3. We are going to put the answer in cell B3, so we left click on cell B3, so it is highlighted. Next, we type in an equals sign, then we type in the letters sq, and a drop down box appears. In the box, we are going to left double click on the first option, sqrt. From here, we are going to left click on the cell we want the square root of, in this case cell C3. Next, we type in a closed parenthesis, and then hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 6.
