Loakan Airport (also called Baguio Airport) in the Philippines:
Basic Info
• Name: Loakan Airport (Filipino: Paliparan ng Loakan).
• IATA code: BAG.
• ICAO code: RPUB.
• Type: Public / domestic (minor) airport.
• Location: Serves Baguio City, in province of Benguet, Philippines.
• Elevation: ~ 1,296 m (4,251 ft) above sea level.
• Runway: One runway (09/27), length ~ 1,802 m (5,912 ft), surface concrete.
History & Operations
• The airport was originally built in 1934.
• Over the years, commercial service was problematic due to navigational difficulties, short runway, and terrain constraints.
• It was closed to regular commercial flights for a long period, though it remained open for military, charter, or private flights.
• Reopening: On December 16, 2022, the airport resumed commercial operations, with flights between Baguio and Cebu.
• However, the Baguio–Cebu route was suspended as of July 1, 2024 due to poor demand or operational issues.
• Currently, scheduled commercial service is limited or possibly suspended; the airport is still used for military, charter, and general aviation.
Challenges & Constraints
• Because of its short runway and terrain (deep ravines at both ends), it is difficult for large aircraft to operate there.
• Weather and visibility are often problems, making approaches and landings more challenging.
• The airport is classified as a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport under Philippine rules.
