SQL for Beginners - Learn to Create a Database & Query Data & Connect to a Database from Excel

Hi everyone!

Today I have a beginners tutorial on SQL. You will learn how to create a database and setup your database schema in the tables you create and how to define relationships between these tables and specify various constraints on the data stored in tables. You will learn what a primary and foreign key are and how to use these to query data stored across multiple tables.

You will learn how to insert, update and delete data in SQL database. Then you will learn how to perform basic queries across the tables you create. We will also spend some time exploring the different types of joins available in SQL; inner join, left join, right join, full join and self join. I will provide you with practical examples of all of these to help you understand the key differences.

I will also cover various aggregate functions that can be used in SQL e.g. AVG, SUM, COUNT and will also explore their use with respect to the GROUP BY statement for grouping data and forming more complex queries.

Then we will explore some more advanced topics such as creating reusable SQL statements by writing functions and stored procedures and the key differences between these. We will also look at using variables and if else statements in your SQL statements.

Then we will continue with some database management techniques such as backing up a database, restoring a database and dropping a database. We will also look at how to connect to a database from Excel and use the Power Query Editor to perform some basic queries and adjustments to our data.

I will show you all of this in SQL Server Management Studio.
