Danish PM Mette Frederiksen appeared lost for words when asked if she could still trust the US, as she arrived for an emergency leaders summit in Brussels on Thursday.
"Can you still trust the US?" a reporter asked.
"Errr..." she began. "I mean, we have been working very closely with the U.S. for many years, but we have to work together respectfully without threatening each other. And therefore, I, of course, hope to find a political solution within the framework of democracy and how we cooperate as allies."
"Prime Minister, did Trump's bullying win in the end? Did Trump's bullying win in the end? And I'm not sure I heard whether you said you were willing to renegotiate the 1951 pact?" another asked.
"We have a defence agreement with the U.S. We have had it since 1951. We said to the Americans a year ago that we can discuss our agreement on defence, but it has to be in the framework of us as a sovereign state, of course," she added.
It followed the furious row between the US and Europe over Greenland. Donald Trump said he was suspending plans to impose extra tariffs on eight European countries after coming to a 'framework' of a deal with NATO's Mark Rutte on Wednesday night - after insisting he needed Greenland for 'national security'.
