Training Your Dog For The Trail: Commands They Should Know for Hiking, Backpacking, and Thru-Hiking

It doesn't matter whether you are getting ready to train up your first trail dog or are trying to figure out which commands to teach your dog to make hiking more enjoyable, this video goes through all of the basic commands that your dog needs to know for success!

Over years of hiking with my dogs, I have narrowed down a list of essential commands they need to know. Training my dogs for the trail has made our day hiking trips and backpacking trips more enjoyable. Without good manners, there is no way we would have been able to successfully complete our thru-hike of the San Luis Loop.

That isn't to say they are always 100% perfect. These commands took years to nail down with lots of practice and problem solving in between. So no matter where you are on your hiking journey with your dog, keep at it and have patience! Great trail dogs take time!
