About the Organ:
The first post-Reformation organ in the Canton of Zurich was installed here in 1809, acquired from the secularized Salem Abbey; it was originally built 1766–1768 by Karl Joseph Riepp for that monastery.
In 1836 the organ was moved to the west gallery after the rood screen was removed, and its Rückpositiv was integrated into the main case.
A major rebuilding in 1888 by E. F. Walcker (Ludwigsburg) enlarged and updated the instrument into a late-Romantic masterpiece with 56 registers on three manuals + pedal.
A restoration (1980–1984) by Orgelbau Kuhn AG returned much of the Walcker specification and mechanical action, preserving one of Europe’s significant Romantic organs.
The organ contains 56 ranks, is mechanical key action; pneumatic stop action, and the case includes historical facade elements from the Riepp era with classic late-baroque/early-romantic decoration.
This instrument is celebrated for its rich Romantic sound palette — ideal for late-19th-century repertoire and sacred music — and is considered one of the major historic organs in Switzerland.
