Manned multirotors – inspirational write up
Finding out the simplest way, in a practical and
technical sense, for me to build and fly my own,
reasonable safe, flying machine has been a long
term ongoing research type of project. Not always
progressing in the front, but never seizing
completely either. In the search for the answer I
have built various structures to try out the actual
capability of the concept at hand. Some of these
concepts and my thoughts of the outcome of
the tests I have conducted are covered in Part 1,
“Early trials”.
In Part 2 various aspects of building large
multirotors are dealt with such as the challenge of
scaling up a R/C drone to man carrying size and
what to consider if you are using 3D printed parts
in your design.
Once I settled for the multirotor approach I
started out with what I assessed would be the lowest
cost setup. That is the main reason for the two
first versions being powered by 2-stroke engines,
which is covered in Part 3, “Multirotor V1-2”.
After a year and a half, I was finally able to conduct
a short series of manned test flights with the
gas-powered version, but the craft lacked almost
all flight characteristics and features I was looking
for in such a vehicle.
Since I by now could afford to try an electric
approach, which turned out to be a success, I
went ahead and did just that which is covered in
Part 4, “Multirotor V3” (the chAIR).
