Today’s band Foreigner was a revelation in the '70s and '80s. A British band with an American singer, they set the FM radio dial on fire with half a dozen smash hits over their first few albums getting as close as you could get to #1 but they were always the bridesmaid. Actually, they created the biggest #2 hit in history, sitting at the runner-up spot for a record 10 weeks. Then in 1984 into 1985 that all changed. Releasing the no doubt about it #1 hit I Want to Know What Love Is, with one of the most inspired vocals ever. So inspiring everybody in the control room was bawling. Pretty good for a song that was written at 3 in the morning minutes after this legend was awakened by inspiration. The 80s power ballad not only gave them a #1 hit across the globe, but it has recharted 4 more times for various artists after the 80s. But no one can touch the original vocal. In fact, it might just be the greatest vocal performance on a #1 hit with the song being further opened up by an amazing and unexpected musical weapon… and it knocked 2 record-breaking hits out of #1. Interviews with the Singer and guitarist are next.

So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society.
I’m excited to share more from an interview I just did with two songwriter Hall of Fame inductees… the primary songwriters behind the music of the legendary band Foreigner. Lou Gramm is one of the greatest rock singers in history and Mick Jones is one of the greatest songwriter/producers… I mean outside of Foreigner he’s also produced Storm Front for Billy Joel and 5150 for Van Halen. As I’ve mentioned before Foreigner has had more hits than a majority of the bands in the rock and roll hall of fame… and they’e never even been nominated for the honor. They’ve sold over 80 million records and had 17 hits including all of these classics. And today’s song might be the peak of their songcraft.
I Want to Know What Love Is. It was the first single released from their 1984 album Agent Provocateur. It’s a pretty incredible story… It came to Mick Jones at 3 in the morning. And then when he brought it to the band an interesting proposition presented itself. A way to enhance an already amazing song. It would include Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins on keyboards and Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holiday along with a phenomenal musical weapon. Find out how it came to be from both Mick Jones and Lou Gramm in our exclusive feature next.
So actually "I Want to Know What Love Is" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart on January 15, 1985, taking out one of the biggest songs ever. The charity single Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?", Foreigner camped out there for three weeks, and then in the US… it knocked Madonna's long-running "Like a Virgin" out of #1 on the Hot 100 in 1985
