Did Jesus appear first to Mary Magdalene alone—or to a group of women? Was it at the tomb, on a road, or behind locked doors? And were the disciples sent to Galilee or told to stay in Jerusalem?
The Easter stories in the four gospels don’t agree—and these contradictions raise deep questions about how the resurrection was remembered and recorded. Of the four canonical gospels, three (Mark, Matthew, and Luke) follow roughly the same narrative for Jesus’ ministry and teachings, while the fourth (John) tells a rather different story. However, when all four gospels get to the passion narrative, there is considerably more overlap in events between the three synoptics and John. Nevertheless, each account is unique and each evangelist provides different (sometimes conflicting) details.
John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will outline the differences in the Easter stories both among the four gospels and also in accounts from “lost gospels” that were not included in the New Testament.
