Optimize costs and improve scalability on RDS for SQL Server & Oracle | AWS OnAir

Customers have been seeking increased storage capacity and greater flexibility in distributing their databases and database files on RDS instances. We will explore how the newly launched additional storage volumes feature at re:Invent addresses these requirements.

1. You will understand how to create an RDS instance with multiple storage volumes, modify an RDS instance to add or remove storage volumes.
2. You will learn how to create new files in the new storage volumes and also how to move files to the new storage volumes.
3. Finally, you will see how you can delete storage volumes that are no longer needed.


Customers consistently seek to optimize costs across their database workloads. The SQL Server Developer Edition, which is free to use, includes all the functionality of the Enterprise Edition and is licensed for use as a development and test system. We will demonstrate how customers can leverage the newly launched Developer Edition on RDS SQL Server for their development and test systems.

You will learn how to build a Custom Engine Version, which is a prerequisite to using the Developer Edition. Once the Custom Engine Version is built, you will use it to create an RDS SQL Server instance running Developer Edition. You will also learn how to backup a database on Enterprise Edition and restore it onto the Developer Edition.
