M'bilia Bel, born Marie-Claire Mboyo Moseka on January 10, 1959, is a Congolese singer-songwriter known as the "Queen of African Rumba". She began her career as a backup singer for Abeti Masikini before being discovered by Tabu Ley Rochereau, who brought her into his band, Afrisa International. Her success with Tabu Ley led to a solo career in the mid-1980s, with acclaimed songs addressing love and empowerment.
Early life and career: Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, M'bilia Bel was inspired by her guitarist father and began her career as a backup singer for Abeti Masikini in the 1970s. She later sang with Sam Mangwana before Tabu Ley Rochereau noticed her talent and brought her into his band, Orchestre Afrisa International, in 1981.
Success with Afrisa: As Tabu Ley's protégée, she released many hits, including "Nadina," "Eswio Wapi," and "Beyanga". Her powerful soprano voice and stage presence revitalized the band and led to international tours.
Solo career and later life: In 1988, M'bilia Bel left Afrisa International to start a solo career, releasing hit albums and continuing to tour internationally. She is known for songs that convey messages of love, empowerment, and social issues. In 2016, she rejoined Afrisa International and continues to perform.
Musical style: M'bilia Bel is celebrated for her powerful voice and for blending traditional Congolese rumba with soukous and other genres. She is also known for her lyrical themes that often address women's issues, love, politics, and social consciousness.
