In the late 1800's, logging railroads were looking for a better way to get the timber out of the woods and into the market. Since the track was often constructed hastily, it was very difficult for conventional rod locomotives to negotiate the rough terrain. However, the development of geared locomotives would make this much more feasible.
In this brief overview, I'm going to explain the major differences between the Shay, Climax, and Heisler designs.
