내가 하고자 하는 거는 항상 미지의 작품이야
Whenever I decide to create something,
it always has to be an original work of art.


그게 매력이야. 딴 사람이 못 하는 거
That’s what appeals to me.
Making things that other people can’t.

불상 조각에는 최고로 쳐요. 은행나무를
Wood from the Ginkgo tree is best when carving a Buddha.

벌레도 안 먹고
It doesn’t get infested with wood bugs.

처음에 조각할 때 나무가 연하고, 아주 부드러워요
When you first start chiselling away,
the wood is very soft and workable.

완전히 말랐을 때는
When it’s completely dried out

칼이 통통 튈 정도로 단단해요 나무가
it’s so hard that a knife blade bounces off it.

처음에 원목 갖다 놓고 뭘 할 것이냐 이제
After bringing home the piece of wood,
you have to decide what you’re going to make.


머릿속에 설 거 아냐 그럼 끌질하고
Once you have an idea in your mind
you can start carving


한 번에 완성을 절대 안 시켜요
I never produce a finished a work of art in one sitting.

잘못된 거 수정하고 또 수정하고
I fix any mistakes that might be there, and fix them again and again.


그래서 완성이 되는 거야 이 작품이
By this process, the end result is a completed work of art.

조각도 彫刻刀 Carving tools


저 칼은 내가 직접 만들어 쓰는 거기 때문에
The tools I use, I made myself.

쇠 강도가 다 달라 개수로 한 700자루 더 되는데
All the blades on my chisels have different metal strengths. I have about, over 700 chisels.

창같이 생긴 건 창도라고 그러고
The tool that looks like a spear is called a ‘Changdo’.

맨 처음 할 때 끌질할 때는 원도라고 큰 게 있어요
This big tool, that I use first for chiseling is called a ‘Wando’.

그리고 중간 작업하는 데 환도 거기에 삼각도
In the middle steps, a ‘Hwando’ and ‘Samgakdo’are used.

마무리할 때는 평도, 창도
‘Pyeondo’ and ‘Changdo’ are used in the remaining steps of the process.

이 불상 조각은 무궁무진해요
Mastering the craft of carving Buddha statues is endless.


내가 지금도 배우면서 하거든
Even now, I’m still learning.

처음에 할 때 그 마음이 끝날 때까지 그대로야
From when I started, until the day I stop I’ll feel this way

개금 改金 Gold Plating:
Once the Buddha is lacquered, gold paint is applied


불상은 금을 입혀야 되니까
The statues of Buddha must be painted gold.

백골 그대로는 못 모시거든 사찰에
Wooden statues of Buddha can’t go in temples.

반가사유상 半跏思惟像
Bangasayusang, cross-legged meditating Buddha

다른 작품 같은 경우에는 금을 안 입혀요
Other pieces art in the temple don’t need to be painted gold.

무늬 좋은 느티나무가 먼저지
The Zelkova tree has the nicest wood grain patterns.

무늬가 한 폭의 그림 같아요
The patterns themselves look like pictures.


얼굴을 가만히 보면 아주 편안해요
Just looking at Buddha’s face is very calming

잔잔한 미소도 있고 자비도 있어
There’s a very subtle smile, and an expression of compassion.

그런 게 우리 만의 매력이야
There’s something very charming about it.

불감 佛龕 Bulgam
a potable shrine with doors that houses
a wooden Buddha sculpture

내가 앞으로 모든 것을 바쳐서
해야 될 게 이거라고 생각해요 불감
Going forward, I think I must invest
all of my time and energy on this task.

그거 봤을 때 완전히 뿅 가버렸어 내가
When I see these works of art, I feel an overwhelming sense of happiness.

보조국사께서 중국에서 넘어오면서
불감을 국내로 가지고 오셨어요
Bojoguksa came from China
and brought the Bulgam shrine with him to Korea.


*보조국사 지눌 Bojoguksa Jinul: a monk from the Corea Dynasty (1158-1210)

지금 어디 있냐면 순천 송광사에 국보 42호야
This particular shrine is kept at Songgwangsa Temple, national treasure No.42.


움직이는 법당이라고 해야 맞지
It’s like a portable Buddhist sanctuary.

안에 들어가는 부처는 똑같아
The Buddha statues that go in the shrine are all the same.

워낙 작고 섬세하기 때문에 시간이 좀 많이 걸려
They take a long time to make, because they’re so small and very delicate.

태어나서 내 작품 한 작품은 남겨야 될 거 아냐
After I pass away, I want my work of art to live on.

나중에 내가 없더라도 내 작품이 제대로 된 작품이 남아 있으면
If I make quality pieces of art, in the future when I’m longer here my statues will remain.

하명석이 영원히 살아있는 거야
In a way, the name Ha Myeong Seok will continue to live on.

그걸 위해서 사는 거지
That’s the purpose of my life.
