Rome's Imperial Bodyguard was one of the most important institutions of the Roman Empire. Founded by Augustus the Guard was paid better than other soldiers and had better terms in return for protecting the emperor and his family. The Guard had enormous power and came to realize they were king-makers. In time they changed the course of Roman history on a number of occasions until they were abolished by Constantine. Author Guy de la Bedoyere talks about his book Praetorian, published by Yale University Press. ISBN 978-0-300-21895-4 (hard), 978-0-300-23438-1 (soft).
