Chris Farrell surveys the early kings of Persian from the Teispids to the Achaemenids, including Cyrus the Great, Cambyses II, Smerdis and Darius the Achaemenid usurper. This video considers how Darius distinguished his family line from the Teispids, despite the fact that they shared an ancestor. What’s more Chris provides a helpful geography of the Persian empire and charts its expansion. This helps to orientate GCSE students and teachers as to the key families and regions of ancient Persia.
The source material in this video includes material culture such as artwork from the Ishtar gates, the Cyrus cylinder, the tombs of Persepolis, Oxus treasure from the British Museum and Herodotus.
