Bursting the Bubble: Engaging with the Islamic Experience
Amy Poppinga teaches classes about Islamic history at Bethel University, a Christian school.
By Lauren Groff, Ellie Heebsh and Greta Wilson
Amy Poppinga teaches students on a Christian campus how to expand their way of thinking to include diverse religious perspectives. Poppinga teaches classes about Islam at Bethel University, where every traditional undergrad student is required to sign a Christian faith agreement. She welcomes guest speakers to show students what living life as a Muslim actually looks like.
“The whole point is that someday, if my student is starting a new job at Target and in the next cubicle over [there] is someone they happen to find out is Muslim; they are able to develop a better relationship with that colleague,” Poppinga said. “They are going to come at it from a place of curiosity and not from a place of either fear or from a place of misinformation.”
Poppinga is not looking to convert students. She wants to create a space for them to expand their knowledge, empathy and learn how another religion can grow their own faith.
