What makes a Grosbeak a Grosbeak? The size of their beak of course!
The name comes from the French word Grosbec, which means large beak.
While this 4K video features only a handful of this beautiful class of songbird, there are actually over 35 different species of grosbeaks, ranging finches, cardinals, tanagers and even a weaver.
So please, sit back, relax and enjoy this 5-minute journey into the calming sounds and songs of the Grosbeak. I don't believe you will be disappointed.
Grosbeak facts:
Seed Smashers:
Grosbeaks have a powerful trick up their beaks! Their bills are incredibly strong and specially adapted for cracking open tough seeds. These hefty beaks allow them to access a wide variety of food sources, especially during winter when other food options might be scarce.
Musical Males:
The male Grosbeak is the songbird in the relationship! These males use their beautiful melodies to attract mates and defend their territories. Some Grosbeak species, like the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, are even known to sing at night, offering a serenade under the moonlight.
Grosbeak Nest Trickery:
The female Black-headed Grosbeak has a clever trick up her sleeve (or rather, wing) to protect her nest. If she perceives a threat, she may fly away from the nest while singing the song of a male bird of prey! This act can confuse the predator and draw them away from the vulnerable chicks.
