괴테 Goethe (1749~1832)

"젊은 베르테르의 슬픔" 으로 전유럽에서 문학적 명성을 떨치고 있던 독일의 '괴테'는, 37살 생일 파티를 하던 새벽에 몰래 빠져나와 마차를 타고 이탈리아로 훌쩍 떠납니다.

부와 명예는 물론, 정치적 지위까지 지니고 있던 괴테였지만, 자신의 문학적 상상력이 점점 무뎌진다는 위기감에, 유럽 문명과 예술의 원천을 찾아 떠난거죠.

어릴 적부터 동경해왔던 괴테의 이탈리아 여행은 그렇게 시작되었고,
1년 9개월 동안이나 이어졌습니다.

로마, 나폴리, 베로나, 피렌체, 베네치아, 시칠리아 등지를 여행하며, 괴테는 무한한 감동과 영감을 얻었죠.

'위대한 학교'에서 보고 듣고 체험한 내용은, 연상의 애인 샤를로테 부인에게 일기와 편지 등으로 전해졌습니다.

그리고 훗날 "이탈리아 기행"이라는 책으로 출판되었습니다.

그림에도 재능이 있던 괴테는, 이 책에다 자신이 직접 그린 이탈리아 스케치까지 넣었답니다.

"The Sorrows of Young Werther". Goethe of Germany, who had a literary reputation in all Europe, sneaked out at dawn during his 37th birthday party and left for Italy in a carriage.

Goethe, who had not only wealth and honor, but also political status, left in search of European civilization and the source of art because of the sense of crisis that his literary imagination was getting dull.

Goethe's trip to Italy, which he had longed for since childhood, began like that,
It lasted for a year and nine months.
And later published as a book called "A Journey to Italy".

Goethe, who was also talented in painting, even put his own Italian sketches in this book.
