A Narrative Critique of Firewatch

A narrative critique of Campo Santo’s Firewatch. Full spoilers for Firewatch and I guess Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel The Age of Innocence though let’s be honest nobody is going to be worried about that bit.

Apparently this well-known version is translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a name that might sound familiar to American students who usually study his famous poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride” in elementary school. “One, if by land, and two, if by sea; / And I on the opposite shore will be / Ready to ride and spread the alarm…” Oh god now I can't stop thinking about how many bad Lin-Manuel Miranda impressions students are subjected to by overeager History/English teachers. Pour one out for the kids.

I read Fire Season in preparation for this video but I didn’t really have any organic opportunities to integrate the text into my critique. Which is a shame, because it’s a fantastic book and on the Firewatch commentaries the developers mention that almost everyone on the staff read it for this game.

I actually love this book, although I guess if you know the ending a lot of the primary tension is gone. Sorry.
